Basic technical information and history of the invention of 3 in 1 Sofa Wall Bed

The function of the Bed and the Sofa are clear. But the table in our case has an additional, very important function beside being used as a coffee table: it’s the main support for the opened bed. And that’s the strongest and most stable support a bed can have. At the same time, everyone would like to have a coffee table in front of their sofa. So, the coffee table in front of the sofa creates a “win-win” situation – you get stronger bed and better seating experience.

But why isn’t everyone else using a coffee table as a bed support?

Firstly, this idea has been patented by us. And secondly, almost all the existing mechanisms open the bed very low, leaving no space for a table.

There are several distinct advantages between our sofa wall beds and the existing ones:

Only we use a table in front of the sofa for support.

Our mechanism is located in front of the bed, so the centre of gravity is inside the bed cabinet when the bed is closed. This means that once closed the bed will stay closed even if the supporting gas struts are removed. This makes the bed very safe and easy to service if required.

It is designed to support the bed from underneath and requires half the force the counterbalancing mechanisms need. The weight of the bed and the force of the gas struts are transferred to the floor, not to the bed cabinet

Here’s how everything started…

You have probably heard the proverb: “Necessity is the mother of invention”. Here’s what the inventor of the “3 in 1 System”, Z.Dimitrov, says:

“In 2016 I decided to install a wall bed in my living room, so it can be used as a bedroom too.

As an experienced carpenter I decided that I can order a mechanism and build the rest myself.

But after a month of searching, I couldn’t find a mechanism or a supplier that can make a wall bed to accommodate and support my favorite Italian king size mattress.

Not a single model could support the weight of my mattress(40kg) nor accommodate it because of the thickness (10”).

As an engineer I have figured out that there is an underlying problem with all the existing mechanisms: they all work by counterbalancing the weight of the bed. Plus, there is a leverage factor. So, in order to support a bed that weighs 50 kg you need a counterbalancing force of 200kg. And in my case the bed was 80+kg which required around 350kg of counterbalancing force. That’s almost half a ton of force applied to the bed cabinet. No wonder that most of the wall beds still come with 1-, 2- or maximum 5-years guarantee.

I wasn’t happy at all with the existing options and decided to build my own wall bed…

I designed a simple but strong and reliable mechanism that was positioned in front of the bed. It was very effective in supporting the bed. It handled it together with my heavy mattress easily. But now I had to find out how to “hide” the mechanism which was seating in front of the bed cabinet. The most obvious solution was to build a sofa in front of the bed cabinet.

At that point I have realised that there is a novelty element in my mechanism and made a patent search. I was encouraged that I couldn’t find any “previous art”. In 2017 I contacted a patent attorney, who helped me with the patent application. Meanwhile, I have built the first working prototype. It was a wall bed with an ottoman for seating and bed support. Soon after that I have built an improved version with sofa and coffee table as support. It was even better performing.

Eventually, I have improved the design to what we have now – 3 in 1 Sofa Wall Bed with a Lift up Coffee Table or “3 in 1” System that all our clients love.”
